I wanted to follow up with a bit more discussion here, and include a bit more about the study. Many things were done to preserve the illusion of customization while not actually giving any one athlete an advantage that the other athletes did not have. I asked for last set RPEs, feedback on the training approach as a whole on a week by week basis, and also had to average my response over the whole group so that when athletes received the updated week and training numbers, they felt that it could be a custom week for them. Athletes were given training on a week by week basis to show that I was making changes in the moment. In some cases, the language I used suggested I bumped up training loads, or other weeks I told them to just hang on and fatigue would soon dissipate. I made sure none of the athletes knew each other so they could not compare training approaches. What does this mean? Assuming the athletes thought they were getting custom coaching, which almost all of them did, we can conclude that strength progress is not affected by believing your program is tailored just to you. As I mentioned, training volume itself is a big driver of progress, and it seems that accountability or wanting to impress a coach does not express itself in overall progress. Coaching has many benefits and better progress or fewer injuries may still be among those qualities, depending on the coach or coaches. But in volume-matched cases, there is no difference in strength. A big thank you to Andrew Vigotsky and Joe Stanek, who each had a part in the statistical analysis. Were it not for them, I'd just be fumbling around in the dark. --------------------------------------------------------------------
