Hi everyone! Today, I’m excited to share my first adventures exploring the incredible hiking trails in my new state. Since moving here, I’ve been on a mission to discover the best local spots to hike, and I’ve found some amazing trails in the Superstition Wilderness, located on the east side of Phoenix. The Superstition Wilderness is an incredible area that was first designated as a protected wilderness in 1939 and expanded to its current size of about 160,200 acres in 1984. This rugged and starkly beautiful terrain has a well-developed trail system. It’s popular during cooler months, but conditions can vary—some trails are easy to navigate, while others are rough or nearly impassable. Make sure you’re well-prepared, as this wilderness demands respect—think searing summer heat, limited water, and even occasional winter snowstorms. There’s also plenty of local legend here, including tales of lost gold mines and secret maps. While those stories are fun to hear, my focus was all about the trails! Today, I’ll share three of my first moderate to strenuous hikes, which are some of the most recommended in the Superstition Wilderness: Boulder Canyon Trail, Peralta Trail, and Flat Iron Trail. All three of these hikes are of moderate length, about 5 miles each to the best viewpoints, although if you hike the full trails you can hike further on each of them. The elevation gains, however, vary significantly: Boulder Canyon has the least elevation gain at about 620 to 1000 feet, followed by Peralta Trail with 1,390 feet, and the challenging Flat Iron Trail with a whopping 2,461 feet. Each trail offers its own unique adventure and stunning views. 0:00 About the Superstition Wilderness 1:14 Boulder Canyon Trail 3:16 Peralta Trail 4:39 Flat Iron via Siphon Draw
