This month marks one year since Minnesota passed a law making it easier to recycle unwanted paint. An Osseo paint store, which serves as a free drop-off site for old paint, has found the program brings in new business. For more than 60 years, the paint store in the 200 block of Osseo's Central Avenue has been the place for locals to buy paint. With its ties to the original 1920s Savitt Brothers paint store in Minneapolis, Osseo Savitt Paint has a range of customers. "We have a lot of residents that come in, people that are coming through town [from] Maple Grove, Champlin, we also have a lot of commercial customers in Minneapolis," said Daniel Spanier, co-owner of Osseo Savitt Paint. That customer base is expanding and business is up, thanks in part to a one–year old paint recycling program that's introducing new customers to the Osseo store. "We can accept old paint, discontinued paint, unused paint, and there's no charge to drop that off," said Spanier. At Osseo's store, a large box is filled with dozens of gallons of old paint. It's a sampling of the paint dropped off at the store in just the past two weeks. The store typically collects enough paint each month for two visits from Amazon Environmental Inc. in Fridley which collects the paints for recycling. Color technician Dane Cree at Osseo Savitt Paint says while the store and the program doesn't accept spray paints, they do accept oil and latex paints as well as others from residents and businesses. "Most of it [collected paint] is just typical interior, exterior residential paint," said Cree. "Some of it's industrial, we do take some polyurethane and shellac, varnishes and things like that as well." Minnesota is one of eight states participating in the paint recycling program, geared to keep old paint out of the landfill. Nonprofit PaintCare manages the program, and a 75 cent fee is added to the purchase of every gallon of paint sold at any store throughout the state. Since last November when the paint recycling program started, more than 750,000 gallons of paint have been recycled in the state and 184 independent paint stores and paint manufacturers serve as free drop–off sites. "There's many more places where people can drop off their paint whenever they want to during the week, they have regular business hours, and it basically makes it much more convenient. They also accept paint from businesses," said Paul Fresina, PaintCare Director of Communications. As people discover Osseo's paint store as a drop–off site, store co–owner Daniel Spanier also sees a nice rise in business. "Quite often they either stop back or they leave with some additional paint," said Spanier.
