In this sermon, Charles Spurgeon expounds on the warning in Luke 17:32, "Remember Lot's wife," using her story to caution against worldly compromise. He contrasts Abraham, who lived a faithful, separated life in tents, with his nephew Lot, who chose to dwell in Sodom for worldly advantage. Although Lot was righteous, his decision to mix with the ungodly weakened his testimony and endangered his family. Spurgeon emphasizes that Lot’s wife perished despite her great privileges. She was married to a righteous man, shared in Abraham’s journeys, and was personally led out of the doomed city by angels. However, Spurgeon warns that earthly ties to believers cannot save a person whose heart belongs to the world. Her destruction stemmed from her love for Sodom. Spurgeon suggests she likely influenced Lot to move there for social status, finding the separated life too "old-fashioned". In the moment of crisis, she lingered, disbelieved the angel's warning, and committed a fatal act of rebellion by looking back. This glance proved that while her body was leaving the city, her heart remained there. She was struck dead at the very "gates of Zoar," turning into a pillar of salt on the brink of salvation. Spurgeon uses this to warn "professing Christians" who attend church but secretly cling to the world, noting that "if our hearts are glued to the world we shall perish with the world". He concludes by urging heads of households to maintain a separated, godly walk to avoid leading their families into similar ruin.
