Lake Balaton is the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe and a major holiday destination in Hungary. Stretching nearly 80km long and covering over 600 square km, this stunning lake has countless coves, beaches and resort towns along its shores. In this video, we’ll tour the highlights of Lake Balaton and show you why it’s considered the “Hungarian Sea.” We’ll start on the north coast in the town of Balatonfured, which has been a popular spa destination since the 1700s. Here you can relax on the sandy beaches, explore the narrow cobblestone streets, or visit the famous Anna Grand Hotel. Next we’ll head further west to the artist town of Tihany, located on a peninsula jutting into the lake. Be sure to visit the Benedictine Abbey, which provides amazing panoramic views across the lake. No trip to Lake Balaton is complete without stopping in Siofok, the lively party town on the south coast. Nicknamed the “Ibiza of Hungary”, this resort city comes alive in summer with concerts, nightclubs and festivals. We’ll end our journey in Keszthely on the western coast, where you can tour Festetics Palace and learn about the history of the powerful Festetics family. This is also a great area for water sports, sailing, and swimming in the thermal waters. With its glittering blue waters, charming villages, and endless recreational opportunities, it’s easy to see why Lake Balaton has been a cherished destination for centuries.
