Here you will find a look and listen to how far this equipment came. Notes: "Dice Lights" -The original headlight configuration on all 8300 series cab cars. The name came about by looking at the side of the dice with 4 dots on them. Of course, In 94 when SP was still around, there were no set requirement for headlight configuration. Around early 2005 (in the years of UP), several complaints from engineers on the San Joaquins and Capitols increased about how the lights would make it difficult for the engineer to see in dense fog (since the light would reflect on the fog, rather than the tracks). After 2005, the fleet adapted the "Surfliner style" configuration. The "New" K5LAs -Cab cars 8301 and 8304 had both their 90's K5LAs replaced with these newer K5LAs. "Natan Airchime K bell replacements" As the years go on, the horns will be replaced or at least the the bells of the horn will be. That is the case with these cab cars: CDTX 8311 - After a bird strike with the 1 bell, the unit sounded like 8304. That was until a quick chat with the crew about saving $ and buying a 1 bell from Micro Procession. Today it sounds just as good. CDTX 6962 - The 1, 2 & 3A bells were replaced after the older bells were shattered into pieces by a truck in a crossing accident. They were replaced with new cast 1, 2 & 3A bells which sound flat compared to the ones built before the FRA got picky when it came to Decibel output (2005). Now it just sounds scary. CDTX 6965 - The 2 bell was shattered by an object in a crossing accident. Then, instead of ordering and installing a new 2 bell, a 3A bell took it's place. Sounds like it's southern counterpart 6952 (which is also a CDTX Unit) * as of June of 2016, 6952 had it's 2 bell fixed. A HUGE flaw for all 6900 series cab cars, was that the horns stuck out too much and there was no way to protect it from damage in a crossing accident. *HOWEVER*, the location of the horn was perfect for projecting the sound waves low and ahead. This eliminated the extra trackside dB that the horn created if it was on top. "From Cab Car to Coach Baggage" -Around 2012-2014, the folks in Oakland jumped on the Surfliner Bandwagon by making half of the lower level of the 8300 fleet a locked baggage area. The ORIGINAL coach baggage (that was Car 1& used exclusively on San Joaquin's service) was just a normal Amrail California coach with no lower level access on the engine side. "E-Bells" -These EMD Steel bells can be temperamental at times, but with a little TLC (and WD 40), they will ring like on day one. The E-Z way out of a situation where a bell won't budge, put an E-Bell on it. Guess a new GW E-Bell cost less than a can of WD 40. Thanks for Watching! Like N Subscribe! -Peace
