Lofoten Masters 2017: Day One

The Lofoten Masters is billed as the world’s northern most surfing competition. It takes place in Unstad among the Lofoten Islands more than 100 miles above the Arctic Circle. Unstad has only 15 residents, but 2,000 to 5,000 or more people visit the town each year to surf. Approximately 50 mostly semi-professional surfers from Norway, Sweden, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, Russia and France will participate in this year’s Lofoten Masters which takes place September 21-24. During that time of the year the air temperature can be 45 and the water 50 degrees Fahrenheit, making the event not just the northernmost, but also the coldest.
