It is wonderful to see all the bounty of seeds that you can get from just one spruce cone! In order to start collecting your seeds, you need to first determine if the cone is mature enough to start picking. Usually you would wait for the cone to drop to the floor, at this point the cone should be brown, dry and with the scales or petals slightly opened. This indicates that the cone is fully matured. In my case I pick some cones directly from the tree once it was matured because I do not want the squirrels to take them away! Other cones fell to the floor and because it has been raining nonstop, they are all broken and not in the best shape. Still they are full of seeds so I decided to pick them up. I would recommend to wash your cones and then wait for it to dry and then do the seed picking. When picking the cone. You will pull the scale/petal one by one. Towards you. Under each scale there is usually two small petals attached to two seeds. Collect the seeds. Let them dry, then store them in a paper towel and then in the Ziploc bag or paper bag.
