In a world flooded by conflict and division, where social media algorithms craft personalized echo chambers, it is imperative to find ways to see all sides to the story. Janan Sarwar, Pharm.D. reflects on her personal contribution to the lack of diversity and representation in children’s literature. As a self-proclaimed parent with a book for every situation, she explores how her own Bengali-American upbringing in Clarksville, Tennessee led to an absence of relatable characters in the books she read. This talk explores Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop’s concept of "Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Glass Doors," emphasizing literature's power to offer universal insights, reflect identities, and open doors to different worlds. Advocating for diverse bookshelves, Janan asserts literature's role in shaping biases and fostering empathy. She urges the audience to consider what they read and the books on their bookshelves. Janan is a dynamic publishing professional, pharmacist, mother, and entrepreneur. She is the CEO and founder of the company Global Bookshelves International, an independent publishing house focused on creating a more empathetic world. Inspired by her eldest daughter’s storytelling podcast for children, Salaam Storytime, Janan recognized the transformative power of stories in nurturing empathy from an early age. Through a diverse catalog of books, Janan and her team aim to break down barriers, celebrate cultural richness, and foster mutual understanding. Janan's profound inspiration, however, lies in her three incredible daughters, aged 4, 6, and 8, who infuse her daily life with boundless creativity and wonder. Drawing from her unique journey as a second-generation Bengali-American Muslim publisher, pharmacist, and parent, Janan will share insights and anecdotes that challenge traditional notions, urging us all to embrace diverse perspectives as a transformative force in our lives. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
