Mayor and hospital reaction to shelling in Dergachi

(13 Mar 2022) Shelling has hit the small Ukrainian town of Dergachi, killing at least three people and injuring seven, according to the city's mayor. Dergachi is located on the outskirts of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, where fighting has been continuing for days. Mayor Vyacheslav Zadorenko said Friday's shelling was aimed mainly at the centre of Dergachi. Administrative buildings, a polyclinic, and the headquarters of the volunteer assistance were hit, he added. All four vehicles at the local ambulance station were damaged. Marina Kulshan, an outpatient paramedic, said staff had just returned from a call out when it happened. Among those injured was Andrey Mashchenko, an employee of the polyclinic who was guarding the facilities at the time. Describing the experience, he said he was scared and worried for the safety of his family. Russian forces continue to encircle Kharkiv, which has become one of the most battered urban areas in the war.
