WALKABLE CITIES WON'T SAVE YOU! Online urbanists love to talk about how great walkable cities are, that if we just built more housing and infrastructure that everything would be perfect. YIMBYs like to say that building housing, any and all housing, including luxury housing, is always good. The pundits that push the "abundance agenda" say that if we just loosen up regulations and let the free market do its thing, that we will solve the housing crisis plaguing North American cities. While that sounds good on paper, we’ve seen what happens. In New York and San Francisco, there are thousands of vacant housing units, mostly luxury condos. The worst part is, the vacant apartments alone would be enough to house every single homeless person in those cities and still have some left over. Because to the ultra wealthy, real estate doesn’t need to be lived in. It’s a financial instrument. A store of value that they can use as a tax writeoff. But without taking other factors into consideration, existing residents and businesses can be pushed out, far into the suburbs, which are car-centric and lack public transit. Without addressing issues like the cost of living and protecting those who already call a place home, walkable cities won't save any of us. Because if ther people who lived there before you came in are pushed out, your home or business could be next when your neighborhood becomes more desirable and profitable to redevelop. Using the example of one street in downtown Oakland and zooming out to national and global issues with development and density, we will talk about what can be done to develop cities and towns in ways that don't destroy existing communities. #urbanism #commentary #videoessay #cityplanning #walkablecities Subscribe to my channel here - / @citiesbydiana Support me on Patreon - / citiesbydiana Follow me on TikTok - / citiesbydiana Instagram - / citiesbydiana Threads - https://www.threads.net/@citiesbydiana Follow me on Twitch - / citiesbydiana Steam - https://steamcommunity.com/id/citiesb...
