The Sony A7SIII is an all round beast. We all know it's a video powerhouse, but even with only 12 megapixels it's still photography performance is incredible. 12 megapixels, when used correctly is more than sufficient and is very capable of being used for large scale prints and client work. After a year using this camera in the field as my primary photo and video camera I can confidently say that I'm a huge fan of the stills this camera produces. Honestly when I bought these I was a little nervous as to how they’d compare to my older A7III for stills. Video no question blows the A7III out of the water, but as this camera has been kitted out for videographers they’ve reduced the sensor to only 12megapixels to maximise 4K video quality. The question remains, is that enough for stills.. and well after around a good year running back to back client projects with these cameras I can confidently say that yes. They’re epic, and I believe this enough that I’ve actually sold my A7III bodies which had double the megapixels. While I love the images out of this camera, and so do my clients, it’s important that you know what I’m shooting, as there are a number of use cases where this camera won’t shine. Typically I shoot a lot of Lifestyle content on large tourism projects, catalogue shoots for brands & ocean based companies, and a wide variety of underwater content, both tourism and wildlife. My style and client work isn’t one that requires a lot of cropping. But rather, in many of my shots relying on cropping would actually totally ruin my image, particularly when shooting underwater where proximity to your subject is paramount in capturing clear & vibrant images. If you shoot a lot of long distance landscapes, or above water wildlife photography you’d start to notice the A7SIII’s downfalls, but for me, who hardly ever extensively crops images, 12megapixels is more than I’ll ever need. The quality and detail in these cameras is really clean. I’ve had shots used on front covers of print catalogues, I comfortably print these images to A2, and depending on the shot it is possible to blow them up to A1, which is seriously huge. But where these cameras really shine is dealing with shadows without creating noise. Due to the 12MP sensor these cameras are better than the A7III which has double the megapixels at dealing with super contrasty high dynamic range moments, allowing us greater flexibility to bring back the shadows without creating noise. These shots are often taken by exposing for the highlights, which is common practice, and usually the foreground subject is very under exposed. But due to the smaller megapixel count, all of this detail is recoverable with only minimal noise. The dynamic range and low light capabilities of this camera blows the A7III out of the water, so for sunset and sunrise shooters who shoot a lot in that HDR style, or who often shoot in low light, this camera will have noticeable improvements over some of the other photo specific models. Also with advancements in AI image enhancing, like Adobe’s Super resolution software, we’re able to double an images pixel count, and it actually looks incredibly natural. In my use of this software I haven’t been able to notice any issues or areas of concern even when punching in. For A7SIII shooters, this software is something you should really consider testing. Even still I wouldn't buy one of these just for photography. It’s a $6,000 Camera built for videographers. And while I do love the images this camera takes, and believe it’s more than sufficient for client work should you not require cropping, both the A7III & the A7RIV are better stills cameras. As a Hybrid camera though, where your primary workflow is in video or film production, and stills are a secondary deliverable - this camera is perfect. It’s capable of producing brilliant quality images for web usage, magazine front covers, and large scale prints. It's also got noticeable improvements over older Sony bodies in the following areas: Colour Highlights and highlight roll off Autofocus and face and eye tracking Weather sealing IMAGES AND FOOTAGE CAPTURED ON PROJECT WITH: Tourism Queensland TUSA Diving For more visit my website: www.tomparkphotography.com & check out my Instagram www.instagram.com/tomsunderwaterphotography Camera Gear Used: Sony A7SIII Sony A7III Atomos Ninja V Sony 16-35mm f4 Sigma 24-70 f2.8 Art Sony 12-14mm G Sony 50mm f1.8 Sony 18-105mm G F4 Sigma 35mm F1.4 Isotta Underwater Housing Sea&Sea Underwater Housing and Domes OrcaTorch D950v and D910v Video Lights Zhiyun Weebill S Gimbal DJI Mavic Air 2S Drone
