Steam Distillation Animation

Steam distillation is a special type of distillation used to separate heat-sensitive and high-boiling organic compounds, particularly essential oils obtained from plant materials such as cloves, eucalyptus leaves, and rose petals. In this method, steam is passed through the plant material placed in a distillation flask. The steam heats the material and carries the volatile organic compounds along with it. These compounds vaporize at temperatures lower than their normal boiling points, thus preventing thermal decomposition. The mixture of steam and organic vapors then passes into a condenser, where it cools and condenses into a liquid. The condensed liquid forms two immiscible layers—water and the organic compound—which can be easily separated using a separating funnel. Steam distillation is especially useful for compounds that are insoluble in water, decompose at high temperatures, or cannot be purified by direct distillation. It is widely used in the extraction of essential oils for perfumes, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food industries.
