Philippe Petit: The Man on Wire | PicBusters

On August 7th, 1974, the people of New York witnessed something incredible, spellbound, they stared upwards. At a height of over 400 meters between the towers of the World Trade Center, a person walked unsecured on a thin wire rope. It was the Frenchman Philippe Petit; six years before in 1968, when Philippe was seventeen, he had began to earn a living performing his tricks on the tightrope and the unicycle. Philippe's big dream had been born, one day he wanted to balance between those twin towers on a rope. On the eve of August 7th, 1974, the time had come; with a few friends Philippe gained access to the almost completed World Trade Center. Massive equipment including a 200-pound wire rope were smuggled past the roof’s guards. With bow and arrow they shot a fishing line onto the opposite building and with the help of strong ropes managed to attach the main rope to the other side and pull it taut. At exactly 07:15, Philippe Petit scaled the rope and commenced his skywalk. This scene from the 2015 Hollywood movie “The Walk”, based on Petit's life story, illustrates the dizzying heights he achieved.
