Medicare Supplement Plans: When to Sign-Up and Avoid the Biggest Mistake!

Enrolling in a Medicare Supplement plan is an important part of Medicare. Similar to Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B, there is an important time period in which you have to complete your Medicare Supplement plan enrollment. If you miss this time window, it can make it much more difficult to be approved for a Medicare Supplement plan. In this video I will go over exactly how that time window works, and what happens if you do not complete your Medigap enrollment during it. In order to cover the costs not covered by Medicare, many people enroll into a Medicare Supplement plan, also known as a MediGap plan. These plans help to leave consumers with little out-of-pocket cost on medical expenses. One common Medicare mistake is not enrolling in a Medicare Supplement plan immediately after Medicare Part B begins. Once enrolled in Medicare Part B, consumers are give a small, six month window in order to enroll in a Medicare Supplement/ Medigap plan without disclosing their health history. During this window, pre-existing conditions are not a factor, and insurance companies can not deny anyone for a plan. This includes all MediGap plans such as, Medicare supplement plan G, Medicare Supplement Plan N, Medicare Supplement Plan GHD, and Medicare Supplement Plan F. If, however, someone misses this enrollment window, they will be subjected to medical underwriting. Medical underwriting involves answer questions about one’s health history, prescription drug history, and any hospitalizations or medical procedures within the last 5 years. At this point, insurance carriers are given the option to either approve or deny an applicant for coverage under a Medicare Supplement plan. Avoiding medical underwriting is crucial for anyone with any prior diagnoses or health conditions than can be denied by insurance carriers.
