General Assembly Media Stakeout by Josep Borrell, EU High Representative, accompanied by Ministers of EU Member States, on Ukraine and the General Assembly vote. Representatives from the Ukraine, European Union and United States spoke to journalists after the General Assembly approved, with 141 votes in favour and seven against, a resolution asking for an end to the conflict in Ukraine. The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, said his country was “satisfied with the outcome” and that “the message is clear.” For Kuleba, “It doesn't matter what Russia tries and how it attempts to undermine international order and the coalition in support of Ukraine's territorial integrity, it fails one time after another. The coalition is there, and it will be there as long as it is needed for Ukraine to prevail.” Representing all countries of the European Union, Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, said that the vote represented “an overwhelming majority of the international community” and confirmed “the very high levels of support that Ukraine enjoys as a victim of Russia’s aggression.” Fontelles added, “Russia has tried during the whole week to distract and disrupt United Nations’ work with maneuvers. Once again, it has failed. We see that really on the votes.” The United States’ Permanent Representative, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said that “today's vote was really historic.” The ambassador added, “One year after Russia's illegal, unprovoked full-scale invasion into Ukraine where the countries of the world stand. We showed we stand with Ukraine. The vote was clear. 141 countries voted to uplift and uphold the UN Charter. Only seven countries voted against it.” The resolution received 141 votes in favor, seven votes against, and 32 abstentions. The document underscores “the need to reach, as soon as possible, a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine in line with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.” The resolution also “reiterates its demand that the Russian Federation immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine” and “emphasizes the need to ensure accountability for the most serious crimes under international law committed on the territory of Ukraine”.
