I’ve decided to head west in search of warmer weather and travel all the way around Kyushu. After driving to Osaka and taking the ferry to Shin-Moji, I’m making my way south through the island. On my way from Fukuoka to Kumamoto, I stopped at Omuta City. Once a thriving coal mining hub, the city is now famous for its UNESCO World Heritage industrial sites. During the day, I visited the Omuta Coal Industry and Science Museum to immerse myself in the history that built this town. The area around Shin-Sakaemachi Station was buzzing earlier with a stamp rally organized by local high school students, but by evening, the crowd had faded into a deep stillness.
