Join this channel to support the channel    / @nabilebraheim   Distal Brachial Plexus: Anatomy and Nerve Branches The brachial plexus arises from nerve roots C5, C6, C7, C8, and T1 (five nerve roots). The upper two roots (C5, C6) join to form the upper trunk. The middle root (C7) remains independent as the middle trunk. The lower two roots (C8, T1) join to form the lower trunk. Each trunk divides into anterior and posterior divisions: All three posterior divisions join to form the posterior cord. The upper two anterior divisions join to form the lateral cord. The anterior division of the lower trunk forms the medial cord. These cords (lateral, posterior, medial) give rise to the terminal branches of the brachial plexus. They are named based on their relationship to the axillary artery, deep to the pectoralis minor muscle. The posterior cord runs deep to the axillary artery, gives rise to the axillary nerve, and continues as the radial nerve. The median nerve is formed from the lateral branch and medial branch on the anterior surface of the axillary artery. The lateral contribution of the median nerve arises from the lateral cord and is predominantly sensory. The medial contribution of the median nerve comes from the medial cord and is mainly motor to the hand intrinsic muscles. After contributing to the median nerve: The medial cord continues as the ulnar nerve. The lateral cord continues as the musculocutaneous nerve. This anatomical arrangement resembles an "M" over the axillary artery: The lateral leg of the "M" represents the musculocutaneous nerve. The central leg of the "M" represents the median nerve. The medial leg of the "M" represents the ulnar nerve. QUIZZES 1. Which nerve roots contribute to the brachial plexus? A. C3-T1 B. C5-T1 ✅ C. C4-C8 D. C6-T2 Explanation: The brachial plexus is formed by the ventral rami of C5 to T1 nerve roots. 2. What forms the upper trunk of the brachial plexus? A. C5 and C6 ✅ B. C6 and C7 C. C7 only D. C8 and T1 Explanation: The upper trunk is formed by the union of the C5 and C6 roots. 3. Which trunk remains independent in the brachial plexus? A. Upper trunk B. Middle trunk ✅ C. Lower trunk D. Medial trunk Explanation: The middle trunk is formed by C7 alone, without merging with other nerve roots. 4. What do all three posterior divisions of the brachial plexus form? A. Medial cord B. Lateral cord C. Posterior cord ✅ D. Middle trunk Explanation: The posterior divisions from all three trunks unite to form the posterior cord. 5. Which nerve is a continuation of the posterior cord? A. Musculocutaneous nerve B. Median nerve C. Ulnar nerve D. Radial nerve ✅ Explanation: The posterior cord gives off the axillary nerve and continues as the radial nerve. 6. The medial cord is formed from which structure? A. Anterior division of the lower trunk ✅ B. Posterior division of the middle trunk C. Anterior division of the upper trunk D. Posterior divisions of all three trunks Explanation: The anterior division of the lower trunk forms the medial cord. 7. Which two cords contribute to the formation of the median nerve? A. Lateral and medial cords ✅ B. Posterior and lateral cords C. Middle and posterior cords D. Upper and middle trunks Explanation: The median nerve is formed by contributions from the lateral and medial cords. 8. What type of fibers does the lateral contribution of the median nerve carry? A. Predominantly motor fibers B. Predominantly sensory fibers ✅ C. Both sensory and motor equally D. Only autonomic fibers Explanation: The lateral contribution of the median nerve (from the lateral cord) is mostly sensory. 9. What is the primary function of the medial contribution of the median nerve? A. Sensory function B. Motor function to the hand intrinsic muscles ✅ C. Control of wrist extension D. Elbow flexion Explanation: The medial contribution of the median nerve (from the medial cord) is mainly motor, supplying intrinsic hand muscles. 10. Which nerve continues from the lateral cord after giving its contribution to the median nerve? A. Ulnar nerve B. Axillary nerve C. Musculocutaneous nerve ✅ D. Radial nerve Explanation: The lateral cord continues as the musculocutaneous nerve after contributing to the median nerve. 11. The anatomical "M" over the axillary artery consists of which nerves? A. Musculocutaneous, median, ulnar ✅ B. Axillary, radial, musculocutaneous C. Median, radial, ulnar D. Ulnar, axillary, musculocutaneous Explanation: The "M" shape over the axillary artery is formed by the musculocutaneous, median, and ulnar nerves. 12. Which nerve runs deep to the axillary artery and gives rise to the axillary and radial nerves? A. Lateral cord B. Medial cord C. Posterior cord ✅ D. Middle trunk Explanation: The posterior cord runs deep to the axillary artery, then gives rise to the axillary and radial nerves.
