I added a touch of operatic emotion to match “Vieille Pendule” by Michel Helbronner, which stirred my long-forgotten childhood memory—quietly listening to classical music in the HMV loft. The poem questions whether an old clock still remembers the past or has long forgotten it. With each metallic clang, the poet seems to give us an answer—though what we hear may differ: perhaps time shatters memory, or perhaps it drills it deep down. I found the poem very clever—its onomatopoeic use of “dong” echoes throughout, mimicking the relentless chime of the clock.
