Gufa is a unique cultural ritual of the Newar people, an indigenous group in Nepal. It is a puberty ceremony for young girls, which signifies their lifelong connection with the sun. During the twelve-day-long ceremony, which starts when the girl gets her first period, she is hidden in a sunless room to learn about her own body and receive education about living in society. The room becomes her sanctuary where she learns the etiquette of being a woman. From her female relatives, she learns the importance of being a life bearer. On the twelfth day, she is symbolically married to the sun in a ritual. She is cleansed and dressed in new red attire, usually a sari, adorned with red bangles and golden jewelry to prepare for the long-awaited reunion with the sun. She is cautiously taken to the rooftop of her house, with her head covered with a shawl. This step is believed to have removed all the remaining menarche potency in the girl. Her mother turns her to face the direction of the sun and then removes the cover. Initially, she looks at the sun through its reflection in the basin of water put in front of her. Then she crosses her fingers together, in a unique fashion, and takes a glimpse of the sun by peeking through her fingers. After this point, her priest instructs her to sit on the floor where an array of worshipping items is placed, at the center of which is the image or an idol of the sun itself. She pours a purifying liquid onto the image of the sun and is ceremoniously and symbolically married to the sun.
