A heart surgeon by trade, Dr. Adam el Gamel is also the clinical director of cardiovascular surgery at Waikato Hospital. Since his move from the UK to New Zealand, the cases of rheumatic fever that he deals with in the Waikato are devastating compared to what he'd seen before. This motivated el Gamel to uncover the reason for this occurrence. What he found is that a throat infection, for example, comes and goes, but a viral infection stays in the heart valve and nerves that supply blood. Early treatment and vaccination is the solution to the problem, and continued management after the initial treatment.
