The Farm Security Administration erected over 70 new homesteads in the late 1930s as part of its resettlement program at Scuppernong Farms. This land was once part of Somerset Place and the Pettigrew plantations along Lake Phelps. Each homestead had a house, barn, smokehouse, outdoor privy, and well, with the homes containing four or five rooms. If you have any questions about this video, please comment below. To learn more about Somerset Place's post-Civil War history, join us for our special guided tour, "Somerset Place in the New South: From Plantation to State Historic Site, 1865 - Present." This new tour is offered on the third Saturday of every month at 1:00 p.m. or by reservation for groups of 15 or more. This tour is designed for participants of high school age and up. There is a tour fee of $3.00 per person. Somerset Place, once one of the largest plantations in antebellum North Carolina and now a representative state historic site, is open to the public Tuesday - Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is our aim to offer visitors a comprehensive social history exploring the family life of all former plantation residents: the enslaved community, plantation owners, and hired white and Black employees. Directions are located in the "About" section of our channel.
