Household Expenses Survey Shows Consumption Growth Slowed A Little Slower In The Latest Decade

In today's episode of It's The Economy, the spotlight is on the all-important All India Household Consumption expenditure survey released after an 11-year gap. The survey tells one what exactly a typical Indian family consumes and depending on the changes in that consumption basket, the National Statistical Office (NSO) constructs the CPI index and even the components of the GDP. The latest All India Household Consumption expenditure survey covers 2.6 lakh households. The survey shows that the pace of consumption growth has slowed a little from 2011-2012 to 2022-2023 compared to the previous 8 years i.e. from 2004-2005 to 2011-2012. It also shows that the gap between rural and urban consumption has narrowed down to 71.72% from 83.9%. What are the other key takeaways of the survey?
