Jamie gives some advice that does not land well. From Season 8 Episode 4, 'The Toothpick'. As Paul heads for work to see how Lucas Cooper’s movie is coming along, Ira tells Jamie that he’s going to propose to his girlfriend Lucia. When Paul returns home to find that Jamie smoked some marijuana she found while looking for a missing scrapbook from Mabel’s childhood, Ira arrives to announce that Lucia said no. Asked why, he confesses that they previously swore to never get married. While Ira retires to Mabel’s bedroom to collect his thoughts, the Buchmans head to a nearby restaurant to quench Jamie’s munchies. But as they are walking out, Paul grabs a toothpick, rekindling a longstanding argument when he doesn’t get one for Jamie, too. After spending the night in Mabel’s room, Ira says that hearing them argue about the toothpick has led him to conclude that marriage isn’t a good idea. As Paul is about to return to the office, Mabel shows up with her dirty laundry and the missing scrapbook. Though assuming Mabel took it for sentimental reasons, Jamie is surprised to learn that she brought it to her psychology class as evidence of their obsessive-compulsive behavior. Once Mabel heads back to campus, Ira arrives to say that Lucia agreed to get married after all. While celebrating at Ira’s restaurant, Paul notes that his and Jamie’s long-term arguments are what keep their marriage going. But when Lucia admits she’s only getting married because Ira wants to, they agree to leave things as they are. Delayed by his family, Paul shows up late for a screening to find that Luca’s producers have pulled the plug on his film.
