This video was created for LaunchPad, a program of digital interpretive materials that supplement the viewing of works of art on display in the Art Institute of Chicago's galleries. During Communion, the most important rite in many Christian denominations, priests share bread and wine with the congregation in remembrance of the Last Supper and Christ's sacrifice. The decoration of chalices, which are used to hold sacramental wine during Communion, reflects the importance and solemnity of the ritual. This chalice is made of metal and marked on the underside of foot with the word Model, indicating that it was a sample or model to be shown to prospective clients, such as clergymen, in order to help them decide what sort of piece they wished to commission. Part of the discussion might involve whether or not they wanted one made from more expensive materials, such as silver or precious stones. As the animation illustrates, this chalice was designed in multiple parts, which could easily be assembled by a craftsman.
