The readings of this Sunday reveal who Jesus is and how His saving mission begins, illuminated by the teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. • First Reading (Isaiah 42:1–4, 6–7) presents God’s chosen Servant, filled with the Spirit and pleasing to the Father. This prophecy is fulfilled at the Baptism of Jesus, where He accepts and inaugurates His mission as the Suffering Servant. CCC 536 explains that at His Baptism, Jesus receives the Spirit and is proclaimed by the Father, marking the beginning of His saving mission. • Second Reading (Acts 10:34–38) proclaims that God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power, and that He went about doing good and healing all. CCC 438 teaches that Jesus’ anointing by the Spirit reveals Him as the Messiah, sent to liberate, heal, and bring salvation to all, without distinction. • Gospel (Matthew 3:13–17) recounts the Baptism of the Lord, where the Father’s voice declares Jesus as His Beloved Son and the Spirit descends upon Him. CCC 444 reflects on this revelation, affirming Jesus’ divine Sonship, a truth fully understood in the light of His Paschal Mystery. Together, the readings and the Catechism show that Jesus is the Spirit-anointed Servant and Beloved Son, whose mission is to bring salvation, healing, and peace to all humanity.
