Carmell Jones (July 19, 1936 – November 7, 1996) was an American jazz trumpeter known for his lyrical tone and contributions to the hard bop genre. Born in Kansas City, Kansas, he began playing trumpet at age seven. After serving in the army and studying music at the University of Kansas, Jones moved to Los Angeles in 1960, where he became a sought-after studio musician. He recorded notable albums such as The Remarkable Carmell Jones (1961) and Business Meetin’ (1962) for Pacific Jazz, and collaborated with artists like Bud Shank, Harold Land, and Gerald Wilson. In 1964–65, Jones toured with Horace Silver and played on the classic Blue Note album Song for My Father. In 1965, he moved to Berlin, Germany, where he spent 15 years performing with the SFB Big Band and other European musicians. Jones returned to Kansas City in 1980, focusing on teaching and local performances. He released Carmell Jones Returns in 1982 and made his final recording appearance on Jim Mair’s 1991 album 8th and Central. Jones passed away from heart failure in 1996 at the age of 60.
