Learn more with the Beyond Horse Massage Book or join a Weekend Course. Cold weather, busy schedules, and limited stretching can lead to stiffness. If your horse struggles to bend to the right, it might not be a matter of willingness but rather a physical inability due to tension or tightness. Stiffness occurs when your horse’s range of motion is restricted, often because the muscles and joints in the back, neck, or legs aren’t able to stretch properly. This tension can stem from various causes, such as arthritis, old injuries, dental issues, poor saddle fit, or muscle soreness in general. To help your horse release tension and improve flexibility in the neck and shoulder, we would recommend that you try first the Scapula Releases Technique, or the Lateral Cervical Flexion Technique, and then move on to the Under The Scapula Technique as demonstrated by Jim in this clip. The goal of this technique is to access under the scapula for movement where the last vertebra of the neck joins the body and to release tension in the major muscles of this junction. As a result, we will obtain a release of tension in deeper muscles that affect movement of both forelimbs, neck, back, and hind end. If you liked this video, like, share, and comment on it!
