What are Indices? Indices simply mean powers. When we write 2³, it means 2 is multiplied by itself three times: 2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8 In general, if a number 'a' is raised to the power of 'n', written as aⁿ, it means: aⁿ = a × a × a × ... × a (n times) For example: 3² = 3 × 3 = 9 5⁴ = 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 = 625 10⁰ = 1 (because any number raised to the power of 0 is 1) This concept is very important in many math topics including algebra, logarithms, and even science calculations like compound interest, growth and decay, etc. The Six Laws of Indices Product Law: aᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ Example: 2³ × 2² = 2⁵ = 32 Quotient Law: aᵐ ÷ aⁿ = aᵐ⁻ⁿ Example: 5⁶ ÷ 5² = 5⁴ = 625 Power of a Power: (aᵐ)ⁿ = aᵐⁿ Example: (3²)³ = 3⁶ = 729 Zero Index Law: a⁰ = 1 (a ≠ 0) Example: 9⁰ = 1 Negative Index Law: a⁻ⁿ = 1/aⁿ Example: 2⁻³ = 1/8 Fractional Index Law: a¹/ⁿ = ⁿ√a Example: 8¹/³ = ³√8 = 2 These laws help us simplify expressions that look very confusing at first glance. Once you understand them, you’ll begin to solve complex expressions faster and easier. Examples Solved in the Video Simplify: 2³ × 2⁴ Solution: Apply the product law = 2⁷ = 128 Simplify: 5⁶ ÷ 5² Solution: Apply the quotient law = 5⁴ = 625 Simplify: (3²)³ Solution: Apply the power of a power = 3⁶ = 729 Evaluate: 4⁰ = 1 Find the value of: 2⁻³ = 1/8 Simplify: 16¹/² = √16 = 4 This video is ideal for first-timers and also for those who need revision.
