18th century American society was primarily agrarian, relying mostly on the labor of White farmers, indentured servants, and slaves from West Africa and the Caribbean to cultivate crops. Yet, there were commodities that colonists could only obtain through skilled labor from specialists known as tradesmen. These professional craftsmen used their expertise to create goods and services that developed and sustained the societal and economic infrastructure of Colonial America. In this video, join Historic Interpreter, Matthew Schuller to learn who these tradesmen were, how they learned their craft, and some examples of trades that were commonly practiced around the time of the American Revolution. The Office of Historic Preservation is a division of Prince William County's Department of Parks and Recreation.
