Patricia Clarke had wanted to drive an ambulance, but when she joined the WAAF she was asked to sign the Official Secrets Act. She was very excited as ideas began floating through her mind of becoming a spy and being dropped behind enemy lines. That excitement quickly died down as she was given a box of tiddly-winks and told to position them on a table. She soon learnt that her work plotting the position of enemy planes was a vital part of the Dowding System, and gave the RAF’s outnumbered pilots the crucial upper hand during the Battle of Britain. Sadly many of the aircrew she got to know were lost during the fighting, including a navigator who she would have married.
