Lute canzoni for 4 and 2 instruments 0:06 Canzone for 4 lutes (Terzi) 3:26 Aller m'y fault (Willaert / Terzi) Giovanni Terzi was undoubtedly an accomplished lutenist who wrote and likely performed the many masterpieces contained in his two volumes of tablature (published in 1593 and 1599). They contained some of the most elaborate divisions and delicate counterpoint in the late Italian Renaissance. The intricate ornamentation, long phrases, fast scales and wide leaps were harbingers of later monodic writing for opera singers in Monteverdi and Caccini's time. The first piece for 4 instruments was likely Terzi's own original creation, while the second piece for 2 instruments was a masterfully reimagined arrangement of a chanson by great Flemish master Adrian Willaert. Both works make extensive use of imitation and variation on a theme. I used the MIDI files compiled by Serge Gerbode which can be found on his very meticulously organized website (gerbode.net). I adjusted the sonority of each "voice" to create more reverb for the whole of the "performance" and differentiate between the instruments. I also spread out the lutes to different corners of the virtual "room" in order to create stereophonic separation. Description of the photos: 1. Canzone for 4 lutes, tablature of the 1st lute, G.
