Larry Kirkpatrick describes and reacts to Cavanaugh’s text. Cavanaugh argues that the modern secular state is founded on the myth that religion is especially prone to violence, and the state legitimizes itself over against this as more rational and less violent. Cavanaugh is relentless and unsparing in systematically examining nine different versions of the myth in chapter one alone. In the end, Cavanaugh shows how every attempt to differentiate religious violence from state violence fails, and the secular state manifests at various times all the traits ascribed to religious violence. Cavanaugh interacts with a long list of scholars and historical figures including John Hick, Charles Kimball, Richard Wentz, Martin Marty, Mark Juergensmeyer, David C. Rapoport, Bhikhu Parekh, R. Scott Appleby, Charles Selengut, Emile Durkheim, David Loy, Robert Bellah, Judith Shklar, John Rawls, Kathleen M. Sullivan, Stephen Toulmin, Mack Holt, John Bossy, J. H. M. Salmon, William Maltby, Ernst Kantorowicz, Charles Tilly, Eric Hobsbawm, Benedict Anderson, Carolyn Marvin, David Ingle, Philip Hamburger, Potter Stewart, Warren Burger, Bernard Lewis. Cavanaugh seems to leave no stone unturned. The book in play is The Myth of Religious Violence: Secular Ideology and the Roots of Modern Conflict, by William T. Cavanaugh, Oxford University Press, 2009, 285 pp. Kirkpatrick argues that Christianity is a religion of peace. #religiousviolence #williamcavanaugh #secularism // BIO // Larry Kirkpatrick is the author of books including Real Grace for Real People, and Cleanse and Close. he has been a plenary speaker at a variety of symposiums and a presenter in several continents.
