V-Port ball valves are designed to make changes in flow more linear over the stroke of the valve, thereby enabling more precise fluid control. They are designed for use with positioning (i.e. throttling) actuators. At 40% open a typical full port valve allows only ~20% of the total flow. From 40% to 70% open the flow increases from 40% to ~90%; opening the valve from 70% to full open only increases the flow from 90% to 100%. So, most of the change in flow happens over a narrow part of the overall stroke (40- 70%). For on/off applications this is not a problem, but for throttling applications controlling flow becomes a challenge especially in mid-range where small changes in opening result in large changes in flow. V-port ball valves solve this problem by restricting the flow to a more defined v-pattern. V-port balls have the “V” available in different vertex angles, usually 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°. One drawback of V-port ball valves is the flow is less than their full port counterpart. Depending on the vertex angle this can be as much as two thirds less than full port valves.
