CMV disease can cause symptoms in almost every organ of the body, including fever of unknown origin, pneumonia, hepatitis, encephalitis, myelitis, colitis, uveitis, retinitis, and neuropathy. The identification of viral inclusions in lung parenchyma obtained by transbronchial biopsy or examination of the cytologic material obtained by bronchioloalveolar lavage is usually used to make the diagnosis.
