Tripura: Over 100 shops demolished in Agartala

The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) demolished over 100 shops at Lake Chowmuhani market on February 27 as part of its anti-encroachment and market renovation plan. The eviction, which lasted from dawn until noon, left many long-time vendors distressed. Mayor Dipak Majumder defended the action, citing safety and hygiene concerns, specifically regarding illegal constructions on the river embankment. Meanwhile, opposition parties condemned the move, with former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar calling it an “inhuman” attack on the poor." He also argued that the AMC should have offered alternatives before carrying out the eviction drive.
