(31 Jan 2014) Anti-government protesters camped out in Ukraine's capital expressed outrage on Friday, after an opposition activist who went missing last week said he was captured and tortured. Dmytro Bulatov, a member of Automaidan, a group of car owners that has taken part in the protests against President Viktor Yanukovych, went missing January 22. Bulatov was discovered outside Kiev on Thursday. He says his kidnappers beat him severely, sliced his ear and cut his face. It is the latest in a string of mysterious attacks on anti-government protesters in the two-month-long political crisis. One demonstrator, Alina Koltsova, on one of the barricades in Kiev on Friday said "the government must not allow such things to happen in a civilised country." Others insisted that the news would not deter them from continuing their fight against the government. "They want to scare us but people are standing up (for what they believe in) and people are not afraid," said Mikhalo, a demonstrator who's travelled to Kiev from Lviv. Bulatov is among three activists whose disappearances have shocked the country, especially after one of them was found dead. The protests started after Yanukovych backed out of an agreement to deepen ties with the European Union, but the demonstrations quickly came to encompass an array of discontent over corruption, heavy-handed police and dubious courts.
