Our Lady of Africa Mbuya Parish Catholic Mass Today - Memorial of Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions, Martyrs -Who Were Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions? Saint Charles Lwanga and his companions were a group of 22 young men and boys who were martyred in Uganda in the late 19th century. They were part of the royal court of King Mwanga II, who demanded that they submit to his immoral demands. When they refused, citing their Christian faith, the king had them brutally tortured and executed. The Story Behind Their Martyrdom King Mwanga's Demands: The king expected the young boys in his court, some as young as 13, to consent to his sexual advances. When some of the boys refused, invoking their Christian faith, the king became infuriated. Charles Lwanga's Courage: Charles Lwanga, a catechist and leader among the boys, courageously professed his faith and refused to renounce it, even when faced with death. He baptized some of the boys himself, fearing for their eternal salvation. Martyrdom: The boys were bound, beaten, and starved for seven days before being executed by being burned alive. Charles Lwanga was killed first, and as he burned, he cried out, "My God! My God!" Legacy and Canonization Canonization: Saint Charles Lwanga and his companions were canonized by Pope Paul VI on October 18, 1964. Patronage: They are the patron saints of African youth, converts, and torture victims. Feast Day Celebration: Millions of pilgrims gather at the Namugongo Martyrs' Shrine in Uganda every year on June 3 to honor them and seek their intercession.
