After the division of Conrail mainline operations between Norfolk Southern and CSX was consummated on June 1, 1999, neither road was in a hurry to repaint their newly-acquired rolling stock. Many Conrail locomotives spent years in postmerger service with their paint largely intact, save for minimal renumbering. For railfans, it was a long goodbye to the paint schemes of 'Big Blue'. Volume 1 of Patchwork Blue starts the series with a look at Conrail's last day and Norfolk Southern's first on the Pittsburgh Line, when a mix of patched and unpatched units roamed the rails. On the morning of Merger Day a brand-new wooden sign in front of the Cresson Enginehouse proudly announced the new ownership, but out on the mainline no black paint was visible - yet. 0:00 - May 31, 1999 Horseshoe Curve 16:15 - May 31, 1999 Cresson, PA 29:06 - June 1, 1999 Cresson, PA #trains #trainspotting #railfanning #railroad
