Gunmen putting on helmets taken from Israeli soldiers STORYLINE: Since the Intifada began, militancy has been on the increase at An Najah university in Nablus on the West Bank, reflecting the dominant mood among Palestinians locked in a violent, lopsided struggle with Israel over the shape of their future state. Hallways are decorated with posters of Jamal Nasser, the third An Najah University student since December to blow himself up in hopes of killing as many Israelis as possible. Among the young firebrands are Islamists fundamentally opposed to peace, as well as loyalists of Yasser Arafat disappointed by the meagre peace dividends. Their biographies are eerily similar, tinged with a sense of inevitability. As children, they witnessed Israeli soldiers break into their homes, arrest a brother, slap a father. As teen-agers, driven by revenge, they threw stones and firebombs, were arrested and tortured in Israeli jails. After long prison stints, they "graduated" to guns and bombs. Now they are on the run from Israeli commandos, switching cars and mobile phones and avoiding their homes. In the nearby Balata refugee camp, gunmen Nasser Awais, 31, and Yasser Badawi, 29, spoke to Associated Press Television News. Both men are part-time students at An Najah university and are also active in the Fatah movement loyal to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. "I think education and the gun are the two main avenues that enable us to continue the struggle - we can abandon neither the gun nor the book", said Nasser Awais. They say they may not be able to defeat the Israeli army, but can at least keep it off balance. Badawi and Awais have an ambivalent relationship with Israel. They learned Hebrew in prison and follow Israeli TV coverage of the fighting. Badawi smokes Israeli cigarettes. Now they feel cheated.
