Serial excision is a method of scar revision performed in stages, unlike conventional scar revision surgery. It leverages the skin’s natural elasticity to gradually reduce the size of large scars over multiple sessions. How Serial Excision is Different From Normal Scar Revision Surgery? In regular scar revision surgery: The entire scarred area is excised (cut out). However, this approach is limited for large scars, especially on areas like the face, where the skin may not stretch enough to close the wound. Attempting to excise large scars in one go may: Cause excessive tension on sutures. How Does Serial Excision Work for scar removal? Serial excision uses the skin’s natural elastic properties, much like stretching a rubber band.
