UPDATE (Nov 2024): Be sure to check out the other videos of this playlist ( • Arc'Teryx Vertex Alpine - PERFORMANCE SUPE... ) if you bought the Vertex Alpine and are having issues OR if you are hesitant to purchase (due to the issues I & others have reported), but are intrigued by this shoe's AMAZING & unique performance features. Current video is important to watch to know what you might be getting in to; but I'm pleased to report that the MANY fixes / workarounds I performed on this shoe have allowed me to go relatively comfortably for ~7 hrs of hiking, multiple days in a row, on RUGGED, off-trail terrain and enjoy the unparalleled PERFORMANE features this shoe has to offer. ***************************************************************************************************** In 2014, I walked into a local specialty store in Tucson, AZ and asked for a hiking shoe with just 3 basic features: EXCELLENT grip on solid rock, both wet & dry; deep lugs for EXCELLENT traction on loose footing, and a VERY protective toe guard. The shoe I was introduced too - now discontinued after the company who made it sold out to a corporate giant... - GAVE ME those 3 features (to perfection)... and the 'whole world with it.' Since that legendary shoe had been discontinued I've spent literally 1,000's of hours over the years (and also tried a myriad of other approach shoes) and the sad reality is: VERY FEW come even remotely close to the legendary (but discontinued shoe). A sad reason for this is that MANY companies are sucking the Vibram MegaGrip dick (or as I - and many others! - like to call it: Vibram MegaSlip). And for the record, Vibram Traction Lug also sucks and is barely a step up. Now, I'm not knocking Vibram... they are VERY capable of producing sticky rubber. Rather, it's the majority of modern day approach shoe companies that are ELECTING to use shit like Vibram's MegaGrip or Traction Lug... and the HANDFUL of approach shoes out there that have superior grip (such as Unparallel's Rock Guide or Butora's Mousai) sadly fall short in certain performance features: namely shallow lugs AND lack of cushioning = NO GOOD for hiking mountains where BOTH climbs and STEEP slopes w/ LOOSE footing need to be negotiated... NOR any good for longer, UDH (ultra day hike) type adventures where more cushioning is needed. ENTER the Arc'Teryx Vertex Alpine. This shoe is truly the full package (*ALMOST!*) in terms of performance features, very much like the legendary shoe I was introduced to in 2014: 1. EXCELLENT Grip on Solid Rock (Vibram soles... but XS Flash 2.0 (a low-end CLIMBING rubber that is WAY stickier than MegaGrip & Traction Lug) 2. EXCELLENT Traction on Loose Footing (fine lug depth + fine lug shape = AMAZING performance on steep mountain slopes w/ wicked loose footing!) 3. 'HONEST' Footfall - i.e. the ability of the shoe to minimize / prevent twisting an ankle on rocky/uneven terrain that 'banks' feet inward/outward (FYI: MANY approach shoes that add more cushion tend to fail here and almost make one MORE PRONE to twisting an ankle; the Vertex Alpine doesn't fall into this trap!) 4. AMPLE CUSHION - to be able to do all-day adventures 5. BALANCE of enough STIFFNESS underfoot to protect foot bottoms... while STILL having some FLEXIBILITY to maintain some precision (Arc'Teryx's Vertex Alpine NAILED THIS!) ***The ONLY PERFORMANCE feature where it falls short is the lack of protection on the uppers which is thick mesh (still a joke) but as shown in the video, the protective epoxy, Tuff Toe, can be added to achieve superior protection. Thankfully, the Vertex Alpine has a fine protective toe guard AND lowers! Frustratingly, despite having pretty much all the performance features I could ask for - AND one of the MOST COMFORTABLE 'out-the-box' fits of any shoe I've ever set foot in - certain design features (or lack thereof) render this shoe almost unwearable. Specifically, there is virtually ZERO padding (i.e. ROCK HARD) on the inside of this shoe in places where MOST approach shoes are very well padded. Thus, although thankfully no [ABNORMAL] points of pressure (which I'm NOT prone too but does happen with some shoes on infrequent occasion), the shear lack of padding [in places where MOST SHOES have good padding] = massive sores/wounds. Only time will tell if padding can be added (WITHOUT then causing toes to bump against the front of the shoe). But this design faux pas is atrocious and hopefully this video makes a difference and results in Arc'Teryx FIXING the ridiculous lack of padding............... AND/OR stimulating other companies that have well-fitting & beautifully designed shoes - but that suck in one/more performance features - to create something similar to the Vertex Alpine (minus the moronic lack of padding on the interior).
