The tranquil Papkuilsfontein guest farm in Nieuwoudtville & the enchanting Magic Garden in Calvinia

We drove inland about 2 hours from Lambert's Bay into the Northern Cape. Our first campsite was at the Papkuilsfontein guest farm on a dirt road right through the town of Nieuwoudtville. We had the whole campsite to ourselves and the private sites were perfect for a relaxing evening under the starry karoo sky. We explored a very impressive canyon right on the farm and enjoyed listening to the farmer, Jaco, tell us about his small-scale rooibos farm and the production process. Then we headed to Calvinia, about an hours' drive further inland where we stayed with good friends, Sonja and Henri, at The Magic Garden. One could spend hours engrossed in all the quirky and eccentric artwork that they have created over the years, the space is fascinating and everything has an interesting story behind it. The town of Calvinia itself is very small, but has a few surprises...it is home to the biggest red postbox in the country as well as one of the largest collections of dinky cars either Colin or I have seen! Not to mention Calvinia Vleis, the best butchery with the tastiest lamb...drool.
