NASA Satellite to Crash Back to Earth Today | 1,300-Pound Satellite Reenters Earth: What Happens?

A NASA spacecraft is set for a dramatic return to Earth after nearly 14 years in space. The Van Allen Probe A, launched by NASA in 2012 to study Earth’s radiation belts, is expected to make an uncontrolled reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. According to NASA and the United States Space Force, the 1,323-pound spacecraft is predicted to hit the atmosphere around 7:45 PM ET, with a 24-hour uncertainty window. While most of the spacecraft will burn up during reentry, experts say some debris could survive and reach Earth. NASA says the risk of debris harming anyone is extremely low — about 1 in 4,200. Most surviving fragments are expected to fall into the ocean. The probe was part of a historic mission studying the Van Allen radiation belts, rings of energetic particles trapped by Earth’s magnetic field that protect the planet from harmful cosmic radiation and solar storms. Originally expected to remain in orbit until 2034, the spacecraft is returning much earlier due to increased atmospheric drag caused by the Sun reaching Solar Maximum.
