Arthur M. Anderson - Survivor of the Edmund Fitzgerald Storm 47 Years Ago

Here is the steamer Arthur M. Anderson arriving in Duluth, Minnesota on the afternoon of October 11, 2022. She was hauling in a load of limestone to be discharged at the C. Reiss dock in West Duluth. The video starts with her arrival in the Duluth shipping canal, where she trades a captain's salute with the Aerial Lift Bridge. After she passed under the bridge and made her way across the harbor, we then catch up with her again near Grassy Point... by which time the winds have really picked up in intensity. We see the Anderson pass through the railroad swing bridge and makes her way to the dock. We end with a shot that gives us a vantage point of the Anderson next to the huge stack of limestone, which would only grow larger with the Anderson adding her cargo to the pile! On the date this video is published, it is the 47th anniversary of the storm that sank the Edmund Fitzgerald on November 10, 1975. The Arthur M. Anderson will forever be associated with that tragedy, as she and the Fitzgerald crossed Lake Superior together during that storm. Both ships stayed in radio and radar contact as the storm intensified, with the Fitzgerald about 10 miles in front of the Anderson. Around mid-afternoon, the Fitzgerald reported taking on a list after passing Caribou Island and radio'd to the Anderson she was running her pumps to remove water. She also lost her radar and was relying on the Anderson to help guide her to the safety of Whitefish Bay. (The lighthouse at Whitefish Point had also been knocked out of service by the intensity of the storm.) At 7:00pm, the Anderson experienced a series of 2-3 large waves which crashed over her stern, doing considerable damage. But she survived the waves and plowed on. However, around 7:10pm, during a snow squall, the Anderson lost both radar and radio contact with the Fitzgerald. Captain Bernie Cooper (of the Anderson) calculated that was likely the time that those large waves would have reached the Fitzgerald. With the Fitzgerald already taking on water and sitting lower in the water, those waves were likely enough to push her nose down into the lake... and enter a dive to the bottom from which she couldn't recover. It was all over so quickly that the Fitzgerald couldn't even make a call for help. Fearing something was wrong with the Fitzgerald, the Anderson made radio calls to the Coast Guard. At first the Coast Guard didn't really seem to grasp what had happened and was more interested in locating a pleasure boat that was reported missing. By the time the Anderson had reached the relative safety of Whitefish Bay, it was now clear something terrible had happened to the Fitzgerald. With no boats in the area to conduct a search, the Coast Guard asked Bernie Cooper if he could take the Anderson back into the storm and search for survivors. With understandable trepidation, he agreed to go back out and search... knowing that the storm could potentially send him to the bottom as well. But they also knew their fellow mariners were in trouble and they knew nobody else was closer who could provide assistance. The Anderson was then joined by the steamer William Clay Ford, who also left the safety of Whitefish Bay to help with the search. While history now shows us that neither ship could have done anything to rescue the Fitzgerald crew, the crews of both ships exhibited extreme bravery in making the attempted rescue. And while the William Clay Ford sadly went to the scrapyard in the 1980s, the Anderson sails on to this day. For this reason, she is the favorite of many "boatnerds" who follow the Great Lakes freighters. The Anderson is a survivor who not only battled the storm, witnessing the fury which sank the Fitzgerald, but she also fought to save the Fitzgerald's crew. As this video is published, it does not go unnoticed that there are gale warnings for November 10, 2022 for Lake Superior. The "Witch of November" is still very much alive, posing a threat to any vessel that didn't learn the lessons from 47 years ago. The 767-foot Arthur M. Anderson was launched in 1952, being one of eight AAA-class lakers built around this time... a designation applied to a series of lakers which (at the time) were leaps forward in cargo carrying size and capacity. Her fleet mates the Philip R. Clarke and Cason J. Callaway were also built as AAA-class lakers around the same time. The Anderson is powered by a steam turbine producing 7,700 shp. In the spring of 1975. she was lengthened by 120 feet and was converted to a self-unloader during winter layup in 1981-1982. She can carry up to 25,300 tons of cargo. ____________________ If you are interested in supporting this channel to keep new videos coming, I accept PayPal donations at the following link: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/1long...
