Maureen Muldoon at Sunday Service - November 23, 2025 (SERMON STARTS AT 7:20) The longer I live on an island, the more I am mesmerized, and the harder it is to look away from the exquisite body of water known as Lake Superior. I have the privilege of staring at her, being seduced by her, all day long. Sometimes she is placid and peaceful; sometimes raging and ragged, but always she is stunning. Large bodies of water can be captivating. Is this just a crush, or is there more to confess to? According to the biblical narrative, water is the first element present at the dawn of creation. Before God calls forth light, land, or life, the Spirit of God moves across the waters. But wait… where did that water come from? Was water just always there? Is it an aspect of God? It seems to suggest that Water is God’s oldest language. A language that our bodies are fluent in. Every cell in our bodies carries water called cytosol—cyto meaning cell and sol meaning solution. Even at the smallest scale, our bodies are filled with living water. Our first environment is a gentle sea of amniotic fluid; we are shaped and cradled in liquid life. We could say that before we learned words, we learned water, the original gospel written into the body long before ink touched a page. If God has a mother tongue, it is water, and we are native speakers. I hope this wets your appetite for more poetic truth, if so join me this Sunday at Speakeasy. Start your Sunday with a peaceful `new song` by Karen Drucker, bringing `calm music` and joy to your morning.
