We all learned that East Germany ceased to exist in 1990 when it reunited with West Germany, but there's an intriguing twist to this story. After World War II, Germany was divided into four occupation zones controlled by the USSR, UK, France, and the United States. The zones occupied by the US, UK, and France merged to form West Germany, while the Soviet-occupied zone became East Germany. East Germany, a communist state like Cuba, developed strong ties with Fidel Castro's regime. In 1972, as a gesture of friendship, Castro gifted a Cuban island to East Germany, renaming it from Cayo Blanco del Sur to Ernst Thälmann Island. Despite some efforts by the Germans, the island remained uninhabited. The island was so neglected that it was not included in any reunification documents when East Germany merged with West Germany. This oversight means Ernst Thälmann Island never officially became part of unified Germany, potentially making it the last remaining part of East Germany. When questioned, both Germany and Cuba claimed the island's transfer was purely symbolic, although it didn't seem so at the time. Join us as we explore this fascinating and little-known piece of history. You see, after World War II, Germany was split into four occupation zones by the USSR, UK, France, and the United States. The areas occupied by the US, UK, and France were unified into a country commonly known as West Germany, while the area that the Soviets occupied became East Germany. East Germany was a communist country, as was Cuba, and the two countries were really good friends. Because of this, in 1972, Fidel Castro decided to give a nice gift to East Germany. The gift was this Cuban island. The island's name was changed from Cayo Blanco del Sur to Ernst Thälmann Island. Despite some efforts by the Germans, the island remained uninhabited. The island was completely forgotten, so forgotten that in all documents signed when East Germany re-joined West Germany, the island was not mentioned at all, which means that it never officially rejoined West Germany, making it the last remaining part of East Germany. When asked about this, Germany and Cuba said that the transfer of the island was just symbolic, although it didn't look like that at the time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Special thanks to MapTiler / OpenStreetMap Contributors and GEOlayers 3 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music: Music Info: Detective - AShamaluevMusic.
