The ruins of the ancient city of Sardes are located in the Sart town of Salihli district in Manisa. Excavations reveal that Sart and its surrounding area, the capital of the Lydian Kingdom, have been home to various settlements for over 5000 years, and were an important center during the Roman and Byzantine periods. Sardes, the capital of Lydia, known in history as the first place where state-guaranteed money was minted, became a wealthy city thanks to agriculture, animal husbandry, trade, and gold mining in the Pactolus (Sart) River. Mentioned in the Book of Revelation as one of the seven churches in Western Anatolia that played a significant role in the westward spread of Christianity, Sardes holds a unique religious significance.
