This talk was given at Beginner's Mind Temple by senior dharma teacher Kiku Christina Lehnherr as part of the ten-week practice period “Buddha Body—Buddha Mind.” Meeting everything that presents itself to our awareness with tender and gentle attention. Allowing ourselves to be, without judgement, accepting ourselves fully right now is the foundation of spiritual work. Recorded on Saturday, February 21, 2026. This talk includes an excerpt from “Thresholds: Navigating the Difficult Transitions of Life” by David Whyte “…..The incredible thing about the natural world is that it’s just itself – that’s why it’s so healing – because it’s not trying to get anything done that we are trying to get done. It’s not carrying the world as a burden. The kingfisher is not saying “Oh God! Another day of kingfisher”- and the kingfisher never says “ God! I am just deeply tired of this whole kingfisher trip…... every time I want a bite to eat I have to get completely and utterly ringing wet - can I just have one day as a crow”….. The kingfisher never says that - the kingfisher is just the kingfisher. As human beings we are the one corner of creation that can refuse to be itself – we are the only corner of creation that knows what it means to live in exile – and therefore it is an absolute triumph for a human being just to be themselves ….. In order for a human being just to be themselves they have to come from the other end of the world. We’re creatures of the long good bye. We’re creatures who live half in exile and half at home and that’s why we can really appreciate, celebrate and perhaps experience more than any other creature in creation the full gift of what it means to actually be there – to actually be present and to be fully appreciative of everything that you have around you and that’s being given to you - and that everything, everything, everything, everything has it’s own life - - - and I think one of the great tragedies of getting behind the curve and loosing the frontier of your existence is, that you loose your appreciation for the beauty of the world. When you’re trying to arrange the world according to your own machinations and according to all the rules that you’ve learned so assiduously, you’re constantly disappointed by the world. Whereas if you base your life on revelation, on the fact, that everything actually has it’s own essence and is speaking to you in it’s own voice, there’s an astonishing beauty in the world which is a revelation and a healing force in and of itself. ……..” San Francisco Zen Center website: https://www.sfzc.org/ Donate and Support: https://www.sfzc.org/ways-to-support-...
