According to most sources, Richard Hell's final performance with Television occurred on Sunday, March 23, 1975 (50 years ago today). A short 6-song set has circulated from that performance for decades; Hell's only song in the set is also his best-known, "Blank Generation", heard here. (The tape claims the performance is from CBGBs, but Hell's final shows with Television were supporting the New York Dolls at the Little Hippodrome in NYC). Following this performance, Hell would connect with Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan, both of whom had just left the New York Dolls, and form The Heartbreakers. Hell's time in the Heartbreakers would last less than a year before he'd start his own band, Richard Hell & The Voidoids. Television, meanwhile, would recruit Fred Smith from Blondie after Hell's departure. It's a shame Television was never professionally recorded during that first year when Hell was a member of the band, and his songs featured prominently in the set. Both Hell and Television were headed to greater heights in the years ahead, but this original line-up had its own irreducible magic. Photo by Bob Gruen - CBGBs, 1974
